✨ Why This DIY Might Be Worth Trying:
It brings instant architectural charm
Looks like a real recessed niche without breaking any walls
Shape customizable: arched, oval, rectangular
Excellent backdrop for decoration, candles, vases or mini-sculptures
🧰 Here are what you need:
Materials Tools
MDF board (12-18mm thick) Jigsaw or handsaw
Plaster or joint compound Drill + screws
Wood glue or construction adhesive Level
Sandpaper (medium + fine) Putty knife
Primer + wall paint Measuring tape
Painter’s tape Optional: moldings or trim pieces
🛠️ Step-by-Step Guide:
- Design the Niche Shape
Specify your shape: arch (classic), rectangle (modern), oval (boho).
Shoot it or print a template.
Recommended size: 3–4 ft high x 1.5–2 ft wide. 2. Cut the Frame from MDF
Use a jigsaw to cut out your niche shape from MDF.
Cut 2 matching pieces: front frame and back panel.
Use additional MDF to build the sides (2-4 inches deep, for a natural look).
- Assemble the Niche Box
Glue and screw the sides to the back panel.
Attach the front frame piece, like a faceplate.
Sand all joints smooth.
- Secure the Faux Niche to Wall
Mount the box to your wall using construction adhesive and screws.
Make sure it’s level and centered.
For a floating effect, install it slightly raised from the ground/baseboard.
- Apply Plaster for Realistic Texture
Coat all seams and edges with joint compound. Feather out the edges to blend with the wall.
Subtle surface texture can be made with putty knife application for that “built-in” look.
Let it dry and sand lightly.
- Paint & Decorate
Paint niche and respective wall the same color for seamlessness after priming.
Or use a contrast color for a dramatically bold effect.
Install trim or LED backlighting for drama.
💡 Styling Ideas:
Mini vases, busts, or candle stands.
Floating shelves inside the niche.
Faux flowers, dried palms, or pampas grass.
Books + Small-framed Art.
🕒 Time & Budget:
Time: 4 -6 hours
Budget: ₹1200- ₹2500 (~$15–$30)
Skill: Intermediate level (cutting + minor wall work)
🔧 Pro Tip:
If your wall texture is uneven, extend the plaster slightly past the edge of the niche for better blending. And painter’s tape will help achieve sharp paint lines!
