DIY: Transform Mirrors into Faux Windows Use light, even when there is no view.

It can be a small apartment, a dark hallway, or a basement room — trick brings in depth, charm, and fresh-air effects literally without a wall being broken. Ready to fake it beautifully? Let’s go.

What You Will Need:

Item Purpose

Rectangular mirror(s) – Tall and narrow preferred Acts as your “faux window” glass

Wooden trim or lattice strips To create “window panes”

Mirror adhesive or mounting tape For safe installation

Paint (optional) For the frame or mullions

Sandpaper + primer

Measuring tape, level, pencil, saw For accurate cuts and placement

Optional: Hooks or curtain rods for a realistic window touch

Step-by-Step:

How to Create a Faux Window with Mirrors

  1. Choose the Perfect Spot

Pick a wall where natural light hits indirectly or a space that feels cramped — think:

Dining nooks

Hallways

Behind a bed or sofa

Windowless bathrooms

  1. Choose Your Style Mirror

You’ve got options:

The one large mirror with nice wood trim to imitate the look of window panes

Several smaller mirrors in a grid to get that classic French window effect

Curved mirror for that elegant vintage appearance

Tip: IKEA, Amazon, or even thrift stores are great sources for inexpensive mirrors!

  1. Frame the Illusion

With wood moldings or lattice strips, create vertical and horizontal dividers (i.e. faux window panes)

Cut for length and width with a saw then sand the ends and paint if desired.

Allow to dry well before using glue on the mirror.

  1. Assemble Your Faux Window

Apply mirror adhesive to the back of the mirror (or mounting strips for lighter pieces)

Then press gently onto the wall but firmly

Use a level to ensure your “window” is straight.

Space them evenly and align perfectly if they are together.

  1. Add Optional Finishing Touches

Set up light linen sheers or curtains on either end for the complete look of an open window

Style it up with small console surface and greenery or candle styled right in front.

Mount battery-powered sconces on either side to mimic natural light fixtures.
