📐 Step by Step: Build Your Under-Stair Storage Drawers

  1. Measure and Plan Your Drawers

Measure the height, depth, and width of the individual stair sections.

Plan for one drawer per stair or larger drawers that go across two steps.

Sketch out your design (even a rough drawing helps).

📏 Tip: Leave ½” clearance on each side for drawer slides.

  1. Build the Drawer Boxes

Cut your plywood panels for sides, base, back, and front.

Assemble them with screws/nails and wood glue.

Sand edges smooth.

🧰 Then put in dividers inside the drawers, for organizing shoes, tools, etc.

  1. Attach the Drawer Slides

Fix one half of the slide to the inner edges of the drawer, right to the ends of the sides.

Fix the other half to the frame of the stair or built support rails.

Check that the slides are leveled and aligned on both sides.

💡 Heavy-duty ball-bearing slides are best for larger drawers or heavier storage.

  1. Establish Drawer Fronts

Make matching faces that align with the angles of your stairs.

Attach them to the drawer boxes from the inside using screws.

Leave a small gap between each front (⅛” – ¼”) for movement.

  1. Lastly, Add some Handles and Finishing

Screw on drawer pulls or go handle-less for a seamless look.

Fill any holes or gaps with wood filler.

Paint or stain to match your stairway or make them pop with contrast colors.

🎨 Most popular: white for clean looks; wood-stained to warmth; black for drama.
