DIY Project: Make Concrete Vases, Any Shape with Balloons or Molds

Want to style your home with a raw, sculptural, and ultra-chic touch? In this DIY, you will learn how to make concrete vases that could easily be mistaken for designer art pieces, whereas nothing could be further from the truth: all you really need are balloons, plastic bottles, or silicone molds to create these priceless objects."

Concrete fulfills all the criteria for modern, minimal, and industrial aesthetics-and trust us, once you start with this, you will wish to create a full collection.”

What You Will Need:

Quick-set cement or concrete mix

Water and mixing bowl (not for food)

Rubber gloves

Balloons, silicone molds, or plastic containers

A small container for the inner mold cavity

Cooking spray or petroleum jelly for mold release

Sandpaper (medium-fine)

Optional: acrylic paints, metallic spray, or sealant

Method 1: Balloon Mold Vase (For Organic Round Shapes)

  1. Inflate the Balloon

Blow up a balloon to the size you want for a vase.

Tie it off, and place it in a bowl or cup to keep it in an upright position.

  1. Mix the Cement

Follow the instructions on the bag of your cement; you want the consistency of thick pancake batter.

  1. Pour & Shape

Pour the cement into the balloon slowly from a funnel or cup.

Tip the balloon a little back and forth, so the cement coats the inside walls.

  1. Insert a Tube

Make a hole for flowers/decor by inserting a greased test tube, straw, or candle in the center while it is still soft.

Make it stand upright with a tape or skewer.

  1. Let it Cure

Leave it to dry for 24-48 hours. Once cured, pop the balloon and peel it off.

  1. Sand and Finish

Smooth out the edges and the bottom with sandpaper.

Paint or seal if you like, or leave it raw for an industrial chic look.

🛠️ Method 2: Molded Concrete Vase (Great For Geometric and Custom Shapes)

  1. Create The Mold

Use two plastic bottles (one larger for outer mold, one smaller for inner cavity). Cut the tops off. Grease them using cooking spray for easy removal.

  1. Mix and Pour

Fill the big bottle halfway with concrete. Center the smaller bottle inside—use stones or weights to hold it down.

  1. Cure and Remove

Allow to set for 24-48 hours. Carefully cut the plastic mold after curing.

  1. Smooth and Style

Sand any imperfections. Spray it, dip dye it; leave it natural gray—whatever you think looks best!
