Do-It-Yourself Candle Making at Home: Snuggling Up in Each Flicker

Make scented, stylish candles-often for gifting, relaxation, and even improved home décor-making.

There is some magic about lighting a candle made by your own hand. Regardless of whether you want boho aesthetics, spa vibes, or rustic charm, candle making is the ultimate do-it-yourself craft: its craft, creativity, and calm captured all in one.

It is easier (and cheaper) than you think and totally customizable to your style.

🧂🪔 What You Will Need to Get Started

Basic Candle Making Kit:

Wax (Soy, Beeswax, Paraffin – Soy is beginner-friendly & clean-burning)

Wicks (cotton or wood wicks)

Wick holders or chopsticks

Heat-safe containers (mason jars, ceramic cups, coconut shells, old tins)

Fragrance oils (lavender, sandalwood, vanilla, etc.)

Color dyes or crayons (optional)

Double boiler or microwave-safe jug

Thermometer (ideal for wax temp control)

Hot glue (for sticking wicks to bottom)

Stirring stick or skewer

🔥 Step-by-Step: How to Make Candles at Home

  1. Prep the Workspace

Lay down old newspaper. Wait for the glue to set before concentrating the wick at the bottom of the container. Hold it straight with chopsticks or wick holders.

  1. Melt the Wax

Melt your wax using a double boiler, or microwave in short bursts (stirring every 30 seconds). Ideal temp for soy wax: 170-180°F (check your wax type’s ideal range).

  1. Add Scent and Color

Once melted, take off the heat and allow it to cool down a bit (around 150°F), then add fragrance oil and dye, if you’re using it.

💡 Aim for 6-10% fragrance per weight of the wax for a good scent throw.

  1. Pour the Wax

Slowly introduce the wax into your container while keeping the wick centered. Leave a little space at the top. Gently pound to remove air bubbles.

  1. Let it Cool

Without moving, let your candle completely cool (about four to six hours). Trim the wick to approximately 1/4 inch.

  1. Cure for Stronger Scent (Optional)

Let your candle cure for 24-48 hours before lighting it. This strengthens its fragrance.
