Make Your Own Designer Style Tray by Resin DIY Project

So, do you admire those high-end luxe trays sold in the stores for keeping one or two candles or perfume bottles, a small fortune for one such? Well, here's a secret: you can make your own beautiful designer-style trays by resin-in-use for a fraction of the price and 100% custom to your taste.

For marble effects, metallic flakes, terrazzo vibes, or bold colors, resin is the new best friend for DIY magic. Let’s go!

What You’ll Need:

Epoxy resin kit (resin + hardener)

Silicone tray mold (with respect to size, rectangular, round, or oval)

Mixing cups + stir sticks

Gloves + drop cloth (safety first!)

Resin pigments, mica powders, or alcohol inks

Gold/silver foil flakes or dried flowers (optional)

Heat gun or toothpick (to pop bubbles)

Optional tray handles (gold, acrylic, or wooden)

Strong glue or a drill (to attach handles if needed)

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Prep Your Workspace

Cover your surface with a drop cloth or newspaper. Put on gloves and work in a well-ventilated area. Have everything ready before mixing-resin sets quickly!-to avoid missing anything important.

  1. Mix Your Resin

Follow the exact 1:1 ratio on your resin kit. Stir slowly for 3-5 minutes to avoid bubbles. After mixing, divide it into smaller cups to add different pigments or effects.

  1. Pour Like a Designer

Choose your style:

Color Swirl: Pour colored resin side by side or in waves. Use a toothpick or skewer to swirl the colors. Marble Effect: Pour white resin as the base. Add light gray streaks and a touch of gold.

Swirl lightly to mimic marble veining. Foil Luxe: Add gold or silver foil flakes between clear or tinted resin layers. Looks stunning with a dark background (like navy or black). Pressed Botanicals: Pour a thin base layer, then place dried flowers. Pour another clear layer on top to seal them in.

  1. Pop the Bubbles

Gently go over the surface with a heat gun or blow through a straw to pop any air bubbles. Don’t overdo it or you may distort the design.

  1. Let It Cure

Leave your tray in a dust-free area to cure (usually 24-48 hours). Do not move while curing to avoid an uneven surface.

  1. Add Handles (Optional but Luxe)

Glue your handles to the now-cured tray with strong adhesive, or for extra coolness (and depth-in-the-mold realism), drill them in from below if your mold is thick enough.
